What Is A Hip To Gable Loft Conversion?
A hip-to-gable loft conversion is ideal for homes with a sloping side roof in addition to the front and rear slopes. This conversion involves extending the existing ridge and building up the lower part of the side slope vertically to create a gable end. This significantly increases loft space, often making room for a new stairwell. However, due to its design, a hip-to-gable conversion is not suitable for mid-terraced homes, as they lack a hip-end roof.

The biggest advantage of a hip-to-gable conversion is the substantial increase in space. By replacing a sloping roof with a partially flat one, the loft gains extra headroom, making it a fully usable living area.
For even greater space optimization, a hip-to-gable conversion can be combined with a rear dormer or L-shaped loft conversion, further maximizing your property’s potential.
Can any house have a Hip To Gable Loft Conversion?
Hip-to-gable loft conversions are an excellent choice for bungalows, semi-detached, and detached homes, though they are most commonly found on semi-detached and end-of-terrace houses. However, mid-terraced homes cannot accommodate this type of conversion, as they lack a sloping side.
Will you need planning permission?
If your property has permitted development rights, you can undertake a hip-to-gable conversion under a Certificate of Lawfulness. This allows you to proceed with construction without waiting for formal approval, as long as you adhere to the council’s guidelines.
However, if permitted development rights do not apply, you will need to obtain planning permission before starting work. Once your planning application is validated, the council typically issues a decision within eight weeks.
